What Claude Code is and what it's for
Everything you need to know about Claude Code: what it is, what it's for and how it can help developers and AI beginners.

Quick answer
Claude Code is a coding tool created by Anthropic that works directly in your computer's terminal. Instead of writing code by hand, the developer describes what they want in natural language and Claude Code handles the rest. It's useful for developers, but also for anyone who wants to automate simple tasks with help from artificial intelligence.
- CLI tool from Anthropic that works inside the terminal and your files
- Edits code, runs commands and runs tests, all in natural language
- Supports agents, skills and MCP integration with external tools
- Requires a Claude Pro/Max subscription or API credits to work

What Claude Code really is
Claude Code is a coding assistant created by Anthropic, the same company behind Claude. Unlike a regular chatbot that lives in a browser window, Claude Code works directly in your computer's terminal, inside your own files and projects.
The big difference compared to other AI assistants is that Claude Code doesn't just answer questions. It can read your code, edit files, run commands in the operating system and run automated tests, all in a single session. You make a request in natural language, for example "add a contact form to this page" or "find the error in this file", and Claude Code interprets the request, performs the necessary actions and shows what it did, step by step, with full transparency about every change it makes.
This is what Anthropic calls a CLI, or Command Line Interface, a tool that lives in the terminal instead of in a graphical application. That gives it far more direct access to your project than any browser chatbot will ever have. Claude Code can work on projects with dozens of files at the same time, navigate between folders and keep the context of all the work during a long session.
What Claude Code is for
There are many situations where Claude Code becomes useful. For developers, the most common cases are:
- Create a new project from scratch, including the folder and file structure
- Fix code errors (debugging) without having to analyze everything manually line by line
- Refactor old code to make it cleaner, more readable and more efficient
- Write automated tests for a project that doesn't have any yet
- Understand a file or inherited project you don't know well
- Migrate code between programming languages or frameworks
But Claude Code isn't exclusive to professional developers. For less technical users, it can be used to automate repetitive tasks in a folder of files, create a simple script that organizes data from a CSV, generate reports from sources of information or even put together a simple static site from text instructions. With the right instructions, a motivated beginner can get practical results surprisingly fast.
The key is knowing how to communicate well with the tool. The clearer and more specific the instruction you give, the more useful and accurate the result will be. It's no different from working with a human colleague: the better you explain what you want, the better they deliver.
Concepts you'll come across
As you explore Claude Code, you'll run into some technical terms. Here are the most common ones and what they mean in practice:
| Concept | What it means |
|---|---|
| Agents (sub-agents) | Autonomous tasks that Claude Code launches in parallel to work faster on complex projects |
| Skills | Specialized instructions that teach Claude Code to work in a specific way or to follow certain rules of your project |
| Commands (slash commands) | Shortcuts like /clear, /help or /compact to control the session directly in the terminal without leaving your workflow |
| MCP (Model Context Protocol) | An open protocol that lets Claude Code connect to external tools, like databases, APIs or remote file systems |
You don't need to master all of these concepts to get started. Most users start with just basic commands in natural language and learn the rest as their needs grow.
Claude Code vs other AI assistants
Many people ask how Claude Code compares to ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot. They are tools with very different goals, and understanding those differences helps you pick the right one for each situation:
| Feature | Claude Code | ChatGPT | GitHub Copilot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Access to the local file system | Yes, full | No | Partial (via IDE) |
| Runs commands in the terminal | Yes | No | No |
| Integration with external tools (MCP) | Yes | Limited | No |
| Works on multiple files at the same time | Yes | No | Partial |
| Ideal for | Complete projects in the terminal | Questions, texts, analysis | Code autocomplete in the editor |
In short: Claude Code is the right choice when you want AI to work actively inside your project, not just give you suggestions to copy and paste. If you need someone who writes, reviews and executes, Claude Code is the most capable of the three in that role.
