Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot: a complete comparison

Claude Code and GitHub Copilot are AI tools for developers, but they work very differently. See which one fits your work better.

Two paper airplanes, one made of glass and the other of metal, flying side by side with violet and coral light trails.

Quick answer

Claude Code is an autonomous agent that works in the terminal and can manage the entire project on its own. GitHub Copilot is a plugin for your code editor that suggests code in real time as you write. Copilot is ideal for everyday use in the editor; Claude Code is more powerful for complex tasks and workflow automation.

  • Claude Code acts autonomously in the terminal; Copilot suggests code in the editor
  • Copilot has native integration with GitHub (PR reviews, Issues, Actions)
  • Claude Code reads the entire project; Copilot focuses on the current file
  • They can be used together without conflicts

Ask AI about this guide:

What does each tool do?

Claude Code is Anthropic's command-line interface: it runs in the terminal, reads the full project and can write code, run tests and do refactoring on its own. You tell it what you need in plain language and it acts, step by step, without needing constant supervision.

GitHub Copilot is an AI assistant built into your code editor (VS Code, JetBrains, among others). As you write, Copilot suggests how the code should continue, answers questions in a side panel and can generate functions or tests based on what you are doing at that moment.

The fundamental difference is the level of autonomy. Copilot suggests options and you decide what to accept. Claude Code can act, run, test and iterate on its own, based on your instructions.

GitHub Copilot's strengths

GitHub Copilot has very deep integration with the GitHub ecosystem. If your team uses GitHub to manage code, pull requests and issues, Copilot becomes a natural extension of the workflow. There is no need to change tools, windows or habits: the AI appears right where you are already working.

Real-time suggestions are fast and useful for completing functions, generating unit tests, writing comments and handling repetitive code. For developers who spend the day in the editor, Copilot reduces friction to a minimum.

Copilot also has specific features for pull request reviews and integration with GitHub Actions, which makes it especially valuable for teams collaborating on shared code.

Claude Code's strengths

Claude Code stands out in tasks that require reasoning about the project as a whole. You can ask it to refactor an entire folder, to add test coverage to every file that lacks it, or to install and configure a new dependency. It does that on its own, making decisions along the way.

Another advantage of Claude Code is the ability to use skills and agents that extend what the tool can do. While Copilot works at the line of code level, Claude Code can work at the project architecture level.

Can they be used together?

Yes, and this combination makes a lot of sense in practice. Many developers use Copilot in the editor for quick suggestions while writing and turn to Claude Code for bigger or automation tasks. The two tools solve different problems and do not interfere with each other.

Think of it this way: Copilot is the assistant that is always by your side while you write; Claude Code is the colleague who handles the heavier projects when you ask it to.

Which one to choose?

  • Want real-time code suggestions in the editor: GitHub Copilot is the natural choice.
  • Want to automate complex tasks and have an agent that acts on your behalf: Claude Code is the right tool.
  • Want to try before deciding: both have free plans with limits, so you can test both with no commitment.
